One year ago, clutching his coveted European Tour card, Anand Lahiri
wondered where his European odyssey would take him. Well, it took him through a brace of European Tour titles to his name and an invitation to the Masters! As well as making him the hero of the Hero Indian Open, a golf tournament on the Asian Tour that has been held for several years at the Delhi Golf Club.
It became a European Tour co-sanctioned event in 2015. “At the start of the week, I knew that if I put in a good performance, it would pretty much secure my place in the
Masters,” said Lahiri. “This is fantastic, it is what dreams are made of.” And these dreams were first forged during a peripatetic childhood as the son of an army officer from Pune.
“About 70 per cent of the golf courses in India are owned and run by the army,” explained Lahiri. “So, when you’re the son of an army officer, you have access to golf courses no matter where you go. Every time my dad got posted to a new place, there would be a golf course that was within walking or cycling distance. So,
I just went and played golf with my dad and his friends, and that’s how it all started.” ♦
